Digby County Partnering Funds Approved

Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Keith Colwell is pleased to announce the approval of two partnering projects which will improve the fishing industry in Digby County.

Processing periwinkles and the construction of a haul out extension are two initiatives that will help encourage diversification, efficiency, and job growth in the area. The two projects will receive a total of $30,000.

"Markets for alternative species and the need for reliable wharves are stronger than ever," says Mr. Colwell. "These projects are a step towards addressing these needs."

Despite strong demand for Periwinkle meat, local sellers have been unable to extract them from the shell quick enough. Some funds for an improved extraction system could lead to dozens of jobs for both pickers and processors of this shellfish.

A haul out extension will let the area's 15 boats save both time and money. More space means more boats can be serviced. This infrastructure is also expected to encourage greater recreational fishing opportunities and spinoff activity.

The projects were recommended by staff according to program criteria. Funding comes from the department's fisheries development programs while the rest comes from the applicant and other public sources.
