Cumberland County Partnering Funds Approved
Fisheries/Aquaculture-Cumberland County Partnering Funds Approved
Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Keith Colwell has announced two projects which will help improve the fishing industry in Cumberland County.
The construction of a new haul for Advocate Harbour and the testing of a mechanized harvesting technique for bottom feeding American Oysters in Malagash are set to improve infrastructure, aquaculture, and employment in the area.
"Efficiency is important for both boat owners and aquaculturalists," said Mr. Colwell. "These initiatives will make the future a lot brighter for people in these areas."
The projects will receive $13,000 and will generate 13 jobs in the short-term with many more expected in the long-term.
The aquaculture project is expected to increase the number of fish on a farm. This could, eventually, lead to more jobs in processing.
The new haul in Malagash will be used by 15 boats saving fishermen and aquaculturalists time and money because repairs will be faster.
The projects were recommended by staff according program criteria. Funding comes from the department's fisheries development programs while the rest comes from the applicant and other public sources.
