Discussion of Landlord-Tenant Issues
Thousands of Nova Scotians rent their homes and many others own rental properties, making landlord-tenant issues an important concern for many people. In Nova Scotia, these issues are regulated by the Residential Tenancies Act, which sets guidelines and establishes a process for resolving disputes between landlords and tenants.
The Department of Business and Consumer Services is currently reviewing the act. To help obtain feedback from landlords, tenants and the public, a discussion paper covering residential tenancies issues is now being distributed.
The paper was put together following extensive consultation with the Residential Tenancies External Committee, which had representatives from landlords, tenants, developers and government.
"Most Nova Scotians, at some point in their lives, have or will rent an apartment or other home," Business and Consumer Services Minister Keith Colwell said. "Many others own rental properties, from a single flat right up to apartment buildings. So there are few pieces of legislation that have as much direct impact on people's lives as the Residential Tenancies Act."
The discussion paper deals with a number of issues, including damage deposits, lease renewal, eviction notices and mobile home parks.
"The paper covers each issue from both the landlord's and the tenant's perspective, as well as how other provinces deal with the issue," said Mr. Colwell. "The objective is to get readers thinking about these issues and responding to us with their feedback. This is an ideal opportunity for Nova Scotians to shape a major piece of legislation."
The paper is being distributed to most tenants' and property owners' associations, student groups and other housing-related organizations. Copies may be obtained at the Government Bookstore, at 1700 Granville St., Halifax, and at Access Nova Scotia centres in Halifax, Dartmouth, Sydney, Truro, Kentville, Bridgewater and Yarmouth, or by calling 1-800-670-4357.
