Youth Drop-in Centre Survey

Youth drop-in centre staff throughout the province are invited to participate in a Sport and Recreation Commission telephone survey intended to identify types of assistance the centres may require in the future.

"In view of the fact that sport and recreation activities are recognized as playing an immensely positive role in young people's lives, the Sport and Recreation Commission aims to assist drop-in centres in offering those activities," said Michael Arthur, Sport and Recreation Commission policy manager. "This survey provides drop-in centre staff with an opportunity to advise us of their needs, and at the same time to suggest possible solutions."

The information resulting from the commission's survey will be used to develop a profile of youth drop-in centres. The profile will be communicated at the Recreation Nova Scotia conference in November. It will be published for community use, for people who wish to begin a centre or learn about current innovative youth drop-in centres in Nova Scotia.

The commission defines a youth drop-in centre as a place that has: a recreation and youth mandate (non-structured component); youth coming and going at will, with some adult supervision; no restrictive fees; and, no geographic registration limits.

Youth drop-in centre staff should contact Jason Jeffries, project research assistant, at the Sport and Recreation Commission, P.O. Box 864, Halifax, N.S., B3J 2V2, telephone 902-424-4634 fax 902-424-0520 or e-mail: [email protected] .
