Department Presents 4-H Scholarships
Agriculture and Marketing Minister Ed Lorraine presented the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture and Marketing 4-H Scholarships to four deserving 4-H members at an Aug. 26 evening banquet held in their honour in Truro.
"4-H is an excellent youth development program that continues to offer young people opportunities to develop skills and further their education," said Mr. Lorraine. "The Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture and Marketing is proud to offer a scholarship to provide financial assistance to deserving and hard-working young people."
Entrance scholarships of $1,000 each were presented to Nina Reiner of Springfield, Lunenburg Co.; Hanneke deRoos of Port Medway, Queens Co.; Elaine Beaton of Mabou, Inverness Co.; and Gale Smith of Lockeport, Shelburne Co. Recipients will be attending the Nova Scotia Agricultural College in Truro this fall, with the exception of Ms. Smith who will study at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton.
Recipients were chosen for academic achievement, 4-H participation and their essay on the importance of Nova Scotia agriculture.
Megan Sanford of Clementsvale, Annapolis Co., was also recognized at the banquet for winning the Nova Scotia 4-H Council Scholarship, valued at $1,000.
"Agriculture in Nova Scotia is an important part of our everyday life," wrote Ms. Smith in her essay. "It effects the environment, economy, management, science and technology, ecological systems and the societal, global and cultural contexts. There may not be many things that all countries in the world have in common, but agriculture is one of them. This is Nova Scotia's largest bond with the rest of the world."
The Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture and Marketing Scholarships began in 1982 in recognition of the 60th anniversary of 4-H in the province. The scholarships are presented annually to recognize the development of young people.
