Minister Seeks Tatamagouche Advisory Group
Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Keith Colwell has asked that an aquaculture advisory group be immediately formed to examine concerns about a proposed fish farm in Tatamagouche Bay.
"I want to assure everyone concerned that I will not be making a decision on this proposal until the advisory group has reported to me," the minister said today after visiting the suggested site for the aquaculture project. "I am asking that after gathering all community input, the group send its report to me this fall if possible.
"We will be immediately advertising for people to sit on this committee right away. We particularly encourage applications from those affected."
Mr. Colwell said today's tour of the proposed site was key in recommending the important step of obtaining more community input. The concerns of traditional fisheries, including those of lobster fishermen, must be addressed, he added.
The minister said a regional aquaculture development advisory committee, or RADAC, is a good way to provide that input. He offered the department's assistance in helping to set up the group.
"I share the community's concern about the size of the proposed fish farm," he said. "I will be insisting the project's proponent communicate any new plans at a series of public information sessions to start within the next two to three weeks. My understanding is the proponent will be bringing back a substantially reduced plan for Tatamagouche Bay."
Mr. Colwell said he has a responsibility to hear every concern and an obligation to be fair to all groups involved. He stressed that he expects the advisory group to get under way quickly.
He thanked members of the local regional development authority for inviting him and appreciated the time people took to speak with him.
