Port Hawkesbury Sewage Plant Repairs
Wayne Gaudet, Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs, announced today that funding will be provided to the town of Port Hawkesbury under the Provincial Capital Assistance Program (PCAP) for repairs to its sewage treatment plant on Granville Street.
The exterior walls of the sewage treatment plant will be rebuilt to eliminate leakage that has resulted in incomplete treatment of the sewage, odour, and saturated ground around the facility.
The total project cost will be $25,000. The province will contribute up to 50 per cent, a maximum of $12,500.
"This is an urgent project with the potential to affect local residents, businesses and even tourists to the area," said Mr. Gaudet. "I am very pleased that we are able to help the town carry out these repairs without delay."
Mayor Billy Joe MacLean of Port Hawkesbury was pleased with the timely news. "The government, and in particular the minister of housing and municipal affairs, are to be complimented for their speedy response to our request," he said. "It demonstrates that they are responsive to the needs of municipal government, and for that we are most thankful."
PCAP is designed to enable the government of Nova Scotia to contribute financially toward the cost of municipal sewer, water, and solid-waste capital projects, as well as related studies.
