Six Nova Scotia Teams to Compete at Parlee
Six lifeguard teams representing the Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service will compete in the 11th Annual New Brunswick Waterfront Lifeguarding Championship at Parlee Beach in Shediac on Wednesday, Aug. 12.
Lifeguards Mike David and Nancy Witty hope to repeat their 1997 performances in this competition. Mr. David's team placed first in the ironguard event, third in the beach flags event, and third overall. Ms. Witty's team was the top-placing female team in the ironguard and won the overall female title while placing sixth overall.
Although both Mr. David, of Dartmouth, and Ms. Witty, of Wolfville, will be competing with different partners this year, both are expected to do well in the physical events. Mr. David is especially strong in the beach flags event, and Ms. Witty is an excellent paddler who should do well in the ironguard event.
Other competitors on Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service team are:
Suzanne Cowan of Halifax (Mr. David's partner); Jen Hood of
Yarmouth (Ms. Witty's partner); the team of Leigh MacIntyre and
Janet Edwards, both of Sydney; the team of Jeff Farwell and Mark
Peachey, both of Halifax; the team of Mike Kellock of Pictou and
Kim Blackmore of Port au Port, Nfld.; and the team of Craig
Durling of Halifax and Stacey Connick of Truro.
Events include the ironguard relay (run, swim, paddle), beach flags (beach sprinting), water situations, first aid/CPR situations and a resuscitation skills race.
The Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service is a joint project of the Canadian Red Cross Society and the Nova Scotia Sport and Recreation Commission.
