The funds will be used to redesign the interior of the school. For example, classrooms will be re-sized to fit student needs, and hallways will be built with access to each classroom. The new design will support the programs for children from Primary to Grade 8.

"It is our government's priority to provide quality education for all children," said Mr. Harrison. "With this funding, we're able to assist the Strait Regional School Board improve its school to meet the needs of every child."

The funding will also be used to upgrade the school's heating, lighting and ventilation systems.

The chair of the Strait Regional School Board welcomed the funding. "The safety and comfort of our students are ensured with new heating and ventilation systems, and their educational and program needs will be met now that the interior of the school is being altered," said Marie Campbell.

These renovations mark Phase 1 of a program of alterations and additions of the school. In Phase 2, an addition to Fanning Memorial will be built. It will contain a new computer room that will give students access to the latest technology.

Funding for Fanning Memorial is part of the province's school capital construction and renovation program announced in December 1997.
