Results of All-Woman Lifeguard Competition

Sport and Recreation Commission

Female lifeguards from across the province competed in eight events at the first All-Woman Beach Lifeguard Competition hosted by the Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service.

The team of Nancy Witty of Wolfville and Heather Goodfellow of Halifax captured the overall team title, while Brooke Delaney of Pictou won the overall individual title.

The All-Woman Beach Lifeguard Competition included: 500-metre open-water swim; rescue tube relay; run-paddle-run; beach flags; ironwoman (run, paddle, surf-ski, swim, run); two-kilometre beach run; run-swim-run; and paddleboard relay. The event was held July 21 at Rissers Beach in Petit Riviere.

Although the all-woman format is new to Nova Scotia, such competitions have been held in the United States for more than a decade. For the past few summers, female lifeguards employed by the Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service have travelled to New York to compete in the International All-Woman Lifeguard Tournament.

The Nova Scotia competition, organized by Nancy Witty, was sponsored by the Nova Scotia Sport and Recreation Commission, the Canadian Red Cross, and the Lifesaving Society. Ms. Witty is an area supervisor for the Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service.

The Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service is a joint project of the Nova Scotia Sport and Recreation Commission and the Canadian Red Cross.
