Atlantic By-Catch Expanding Exports

Nova Scotia's only manufacturer of pet treats is expanding its export markets, thanks, in part, to support from Nova Scotia Economic Development and Tourism.

Atlantic By-Catch Industries Ltd. of Sambro will receive a $50,000 loan guarantee from the department. The guarantee will enable the company to expand production and develop international markets.

"Retailers prefer to work with companies that offer a full product line," said Tom Reyno, company president. "The guarantee is enabling us to expand our products to seven from three, making us more attractive to potential distributors. It's also giving us an opportunity to pursue European markets."

Atlantic By-Catch uses northern shark, also known as dogfish, to manufacture dog and cat treats. Prior to the company's operation, the shark, when caught by Sambro-area fishermen, was discarded.

"The company employs 26 people in the Sambro area," said Manning MacDonald, Minister of Economic Development and Tourism. "In addition to the manufacturing jobs, Atlantic By-Catch also provides local fishermen with an ongoing market for northern shark. They're adding value to under-utilized species and boosting Nova Scotia exports in the process."

Atlantic By-Catch was established in 1994. Its pet treats were developed using the resources of the Canadian Institute of Fisheries Technology at DalTech. The products are sold throughout Canada and exported to the United States and Taiwan.
