Environmental Testing in Sydney

The detailed findings of recent environmental testing in the Frederick Street area of Sydney have been compiled and are being discussed with residents of the area today by environment and health officials.

Highlights of the findings in the Intergovernmental Monitoring Team Assessment of Source of Contamination report were shared with the residents and public at an information session earlier this month. The final analysis is contained in the report released today.

Dr. Jeff Scott, provincial medical officer of health said the current situation presents no immediate health threat to the residents. "Based on the test results so far, we do not believe the residents are at risk," said Dr. Scott. "We will, however, continue our work. Blood and hair samples from many of the residents are being tested with the results expected shortly."

In addition, a detailed health assessment is underway. CANTOX Environmental Inc., a scientific consulting firm specializing in health risk assessment, has been retained by the federal and provincial governments to conduct the study. Representatives from CANTOX will visit residents in the area as part of a more comprehensive health assessment. Dr. Scott will discuss the findings of the CANTOX assessment with residents as soon as they are available, in early to mid-August.

A team of provincial government ministers continues to monitor the situation. The province will await the findings of the CANTOX assessment before determining further action.
