Agriculture and Marketing Minister Ed Lorraine, on behalf of Robbie Harrison, Minister responsible for the Nova Scotia Sport and Recreation Commission, is pleased to announce grants under the Recreation Facility Development program for northern Colchester County and southern Cumberland County. The 1998-99 grants approved include:

  • $19,500 to the North Shore Recreation Centre in Tatamagouche to assist with the Life Cycle Conservation of the North Shore Recreation Centre

  • $20,000 to West Colchester Recreation Association in Debert to assist with the Life Cycle Conservation of the West Colchester United Arena

  • $3,000 to the Bass River Senior Citizens Club to assist with upgrading the exterior of the club

  • $15,000 to the Truro Curling Club to assist with the upgrading of the rink

  • $30,000 to the Truro Boys and Girls Club to assist with the costs of its relocation to the Victoria School Annex

  • $9,000 to the Chignecto Central Regional School Board to assist with improvements to the playground at Wentworth Elementary School

  • $5,000 to the Oxford Pioneer Heritage Club to assist with an addition to the club

Mr. Lorraine said the Nova Scotia Sport and Recreation Commission also recognizes the need for recreational facilities in the Kemptown area. The commission will offer financial assistance to help the community fine-tune plans to identify additional recreational needs and to plan the best facility possible for the community.

The Kemptown community group planning the recreation centre has sufficient funding to start the project. The Sport and Recreation Commission will consider the project for funding next year.

Mr. Lorraine said he hopes the grants will help the various organizations continue with the development of recreation programs and services for the communities involved.

The Nova Scotia Sport and Recreation Commission's Recreation Facility Development program assists municipalities and community groups in planning, constructing, renovating, conserving or acquiring facilities for public recreation purposes.
