New Deputy Minister Appointment
Premier Russell MacLellan has appointed Patricia Ripley Ph.D. to be deputy minister of the Nova Scotia Petroleum Directorate.
"Sable gas and the projects that will follow are going to be the major building blocks of the provincial economy in the next century," said the premier. "I want to ensure that we put the resources into the Petroleum Directorate to ensure these projects give Nova Scotians the prosperity we deserve. That is why I have asked Deputy Minister Ripley to take on this exciting challenge."
Dr. Ripley has an extensive record of public service. She joined the Government of Nova Scotia in 1984 as a senior policy advisor. In 1991, she was promoted to deputy minister, serving in the departments of Community Services and Housing and Municipal Affairs. Before joining the provincial government, Dr. Ripley taught at Acadia University and the University of New Brunswick.
Premier MacLellan said his decision to appoint Dr. Ripley to the Petroleum Directorate is based on his commitment that Nova Scotians get the maximum economic benefits of Sable gas. "Dr. Ripleys' experience and appreciation for the needs of municipalities will help ensure communities across the province share in the opportunities Sable will provide." said the premier.
She will continue to oversee the Department of Housing and Municipal Affairs.
The Petroleum Directorate oversees the public interest related to oil and gas as well as coalbed methane exploration and development. It is responsible for ensuring the people of the province receive the highest possible economic benefit from the resources including employment opportunities, economic spinoffs and royalties.
