Repair Crews Fixing Rainstorm Damage

Transportation and Public Works road maintenance crews are out in force repairing the damage to roads and culverts in the aftermath of Saturday's severe rain storm. Clean-up and repair of the damaged roads and culverts has already begun and will be completed as soon as possible, with any potential safety hazards receiving priority attention

ARainstorms like this one and the flooding caused by them can be devastating,@ said Clifford Huskilson, Transportation and Public Works Minister. ANova Scotians have weathered some pretty bad storms in the past, and they know that they can count on our department's employees to be on top of the clean up and repair of our roads."

In some areas of Nova Scotia as much as 97 millimetres of rain fell in a 24 hour period between Friday and Saturday causing flooding and washing out roads, road shoulders and driveway entrances. Isolated incidents of flooding were also reported in the hardest hit areas of the province. Flash floods caused by the storm's sudden and excessive rainfall were responsible for most of the damage to roadways, shoulders and culverts.

The public can help the department prevent future flooding caused from blocked culverts by immediately reporting any problems to their local Transportation and Public Works office by calling 1- 888-432-3233.
