Hazard Alert/Winches
If the Department of Labour has its way, winches aboard fishing vessels, no matter how small, will have the proper guards in place.
The department has issued a hazard alert following an accident aboard a fishing vessel earlier this year in which a fisherman/deckhand almost lost his hand and arm when they got caught in an unguarded net drum winch. The accident investigation revealed that many fishing boats, especially in the inshore fleet, do not have guards on the winches.
"When our investigations highlight a problem, whether it is widespread or specific to a certain industry, we make every effort to ensure that the problem is recognized and resolved," said Labour Minister Russell MacKinnon.
Section 117 of the Industrial Safety Regulations stipulates that machinery and equipment parts need to be safely fenced or guarded to ensure the safety of operators. Guards must meet the necessary specifications of the manufacturer and regulatory bodies. In addition, future purchase of winches from manufacturers should include appropriate guarding.
"We are striving for healthy and safe workplaces throughout the province," said Mr. MacKinnon. "Safe work practices result in higher productivity and a more productive economy benefits all Nova Scotians."
