Minister Drives Cumberland Roads
Transportation and Public Works Minister Clifford Huskilson drives roads in Cumberland County today. It's another trip in an informal tour of roads in Nova Scotia.
"I am getting a first-hand look at the road concerns troubling Nova Scotians most," said Mr. Huskilson. "This is a new portfolio for me, and I want to learn more about what people expect and how we can better deliver."
Mr. Huskilson has already driven through the Musquodoboit area and Antigonish County at the invitation of local officials. After today's tour, he will meet with elected municipal officials who have requested time with the minister to discuss road concerns.
"I want us to work together to try and address the various concerns of people in these areas," said Mr. Huskilson. "Transportation and Public Works has a comprehensive, technical process for prioritizing road work in Nova Scotia, but we also want to work with the people who drive over these roads every day. I'm hoping to open the lines of communication here."
Transportation and Public Works has allocated some $53 million for its 1998 repaving program. So far, more than 30 tenders, amounting to about $35 million, have been advertised or awarded.
