Museums Across Province To Mark Museum Day Weekend
Dig for artifacts, take a graveyard tour, have antiques appraised, see works by local artists, sample old-fashioned recipes, sit in the cockpit of a Second World War plane, attend a ceilidh, plant a herb garden, trace your ancestors, work on model boats, shear a sheep --the list goes on as museums across Nova Scotia celebrate Museum Day Weekend, June 13-14, with special events and activities.
Museum Day Weekend highlights the province's rich heritage and the significant role museums play in preserving and interpreting local culture and natural history. Nova Scotians are encouraged to do some leisure learning in their communities and make some memories. At the same time, they'll be supporting their local museums, which are often run by volunteers and rely on support from their region.
"Museums are more than warehouses of history," said Susan Charles, executive director of the Federation of Nova Scotian Heritage. "They are active and interactive community centres that reflect the heart and spirit of who we are as Nova Scotians."
Activities are planned to meet all interests in more than 40 museums across Nova Scotia. Museums can be contacted for event details.
Museum Day Weekend is planned by representatives from community museums, the Federation of Nova Scotian Heritage, Parks Canada, and the Nova Scotia Museum.
