MacLellan to Attend Governors/Premiers Meeting

Premier Russell MacLellan will be highlighting environmental and energy matters at the Conference of New England Governors and Eastern Canada Premiers to be held in Fredericton on June 7-9.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of this inter-regional, bi-national organization. The annual conference recognizes the special relationships that exist between these jurisdictions. Ideas are shared and policy resolutions are enacted among the state governors and provincial premiers.

Conference sessions this year will focus on the environment, energy and trade.

Premier MacLellan will be participating in the session Transboundary Pollutants. The conference's Committee on the Environment received a mandate at the 1997 conference in Rhode Island to develop action plans for the region to decrease emission levels of acid rain and mercury.

Premier MacLellan will also take part in the session New Energy Sources. The Premier will provide an update on the Sable gas project during this session.

Canadian representation at this conference is made up of Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and Quebec. New England representation comprises Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
