Labour College of Canada Bursary Recipients

Two Nova Scotians are currently enrolled at the Labour College of Canada, thanks to bursaries provided by the provincial Department of Labour.

Brenda Crozsman of Halifax and R. Scott MacKay of Waverley are participants in the 1998 Residential Program at the college in Ottawa. Ms. Crozsman is a member of Local 77, Nova Scotia Government Employees Union. Mr. MacKay is a member of Local 1990, National Automobile, Aerospace, Transportation and General Workers Union of Canada.

"Labour education is important for unionists," said Labour Minister Russell MacKinnon. "We are pleased to facilitate workers' participation in this challenging and educational experience."

The four-week national Residential Program, held this year from May 24 to June 19, consists of four courses: economics, political science, labour history and labour sociology. Participants also complete a one-week course in their region on labour law.

"Our Residential Program enhances workers' analytical and communications skills --both vital in today's complex industrial relations process," said Jean Bezusky, registrar at the Labour College of Canada. "It provides them with a greater ability to deal with problems and issues that confront them on a day-to-day basis in their workplaces, in their unions and in their communities."

Each bursary is in the amount of $3,000.
