Sport Fishing Weekend Set for June 6-7

Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Keith Colwell invites Nova Scotians of all ages to pick up their rods and catch some fish during Nova Scotia Sport Fishing Weekend, June 6-7.

"One of the greatest joys in life is casting into the water, waiting, and reeling in your fish," Mr. Colwell said. "I'm encouraging kids, adults -- everyone -- to discover or rediscover that thrill during Sport Fishing Weekend."

The popular event will be held Saturday, June 6, and Sunday, June 7. This year marks the fourth for the annual event where Nova Scotians may fish all species of freshwater fish, expect Atlantic salmon, without a licence for free.

The province is co-sponsoring Sport Fishing Weekend with the Nova Scotia Wildlife Federation, an organization dedicated to wise use of our sport fish resource.

A number of groups are planning fishing derbies and other activities during the weekend. Members of the public can check with event co-ordinator Debbie Langille 902-485-5056 for activities planned in their community.

"We are pleased to join efforts with the wildlife federation to deliver the message that a free fishing weekend is an great chance for Nova Scotians to get into angling," said Mr. Colwell. "It also raises public awareness about how important it is to protect our inland water resource."

Although all freshwater fish can be caught for free, those wishing to fish salmon require a licence. Bag limits and other sport fishing regulations remain in effect and will be enforced.

Stressing the importance of conservation, the minister noted that the public plays a key role in helping the department protect and enhance the resource.

"We work closely with numerous angling and wildlife groups, schools and individuals on programs aimed at raising public awareness of conservation issues," said Mr. Colwell.

The minister also pointed out how important sport fishing is to the economy of the province: it generates about $82 million a year, mainly in rural communities.
