Duke of Edinburgh Award Week

A proclamation declaring Duke of Edinburgh Award Week in Nova Scotia will be signed this afternoon by Robbie Harrison, Minister responsible for the Sport and Recreation Commission. Duke of Edinburgh Award Week is from May 25 to May 29, 1998.

"Leadership development, especially for youth, is a priority of the Sport and Recreation Commission," said Mr. Harrison. "The Duke of Edinburgh Award is an excellent program that provides exciting opportunities for young people to learn a variety of valuable skills, and achieve their personal best in a non-competitive situation."

Sixty groups in Nova Scotia, involving approximately 350 youth, pursue the award through school or community-based programs, or independently.

"Our hope is to implement new initiatives within the province," said Judge Michael Sherar, president of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Association. "For example, we aim to involve at-risk youth, and broaden the interests of these young people by developing their sense of self-worth through achievement."

The Sport and Recreation Commission has funded the Duke of Edinburgh Awards for several decades.

The proclamation signing ceremony will be held in the Premier's Room, Province House at 3:00 p.m. today, Monday, May 25.
