Nova Scotia 4-H Weekend
Three hundred provincial 4-H members are preparing to attend 4-H Weekend May 8 and 9 at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College in Truro. This two-day event is an opportunity for the best 4-H regional public speakers and demonstrators to compete at a provincial level.
Agriculture and Marketing Minister Ed Lorraine praises the 4-H program for the leadership development skills it teaches the young people of Nova Scotia.
"Over the years, the 4-H program has had an influence in developing many leaders in our rural communities." said Mr. Lorraine. "Speaking well in public is a wonderful talent that young people can develop at an early age and use throughout their lifetime."
As well as speaking contests, 4-H members compete in woodsman and square dancing. One highlight of the weekend is the selection of the provincial 4-H host and hostess, the official youth representatives for the 4-H program in Nova Scotia.
"This is a very gratifying weekend", says Liz Crouse, supervisor of the provincial 4-H program. "It's a great opportunity to see what talent and creativity young people have and it certainly makes you proud to see 4-H members present themselves in such a fine way."
"4-H Night in Nova Scotia" on May 9 at the Cobequid Educational Centre in Truro is the weekend's finale and showcases the talent of 4-H members. During the evening awards are presented to the winners of all competitions. In addition, top overall winners present their winning speeches and demonstrations. There is entertainment, square dancing and announcements of members and leaders who have won a national award.
The public is welcome to attend the weekend events and to experience this important aspect of the 4-H program.
