Envirothon 1998 Draws High School Students

High School students from across Nova Scotia will get together in Middle Musquodoboit on April 24 and 25 to participate in a forest environment competition.

Known as the Envirothon, this educational program began in 1979 in the United States to supplement existing school curriculum with real-life issues concerning the environment. Nova Scotia was the first province to become involved, and every year its regional competition continues to grow.

Sponsored by the Nova Scotia Forestry Association, each five-member team competes in questioning about aquatics, forestry, soils, wildlife and watersheds. Testing involves both written and hands-on activities and public speaking.

The winning team goes on the National Envirothon, held this summer at Michigan State University in Lansing.

This regional competition is made possible through funding and commitments by various provincial departments, corporations and businesses. All recognize the value in introducing students to current environmental issues.

Peter Underwood, deputy minister for the Nova Scotia Department of the Environment, is the keynote speaker on April 25. He will address watershed management and youth involvement in the environment.
