Fisheries Still Among Top Industries in Nova Scotia

Fisheries and Aquaculture (to Sept. 2000)

Despite the recent decrease in fish stocks, Nova Scotia's fishing industry is still the largest private sector employer in the province, according to a new study released today.

Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Keith Colwell said he is not surprised by the results.

"Some people think the fisheries is an industry whose time has passed. But this study shows the fisheries is, and I think, will remain, a top industry in Nova Scotia," said Mr. Colwell.

Not only is the fishing industry a big employer, but when it comes to shipments overseas, products like lobsters and scallops make it Nova Scotia's No. 1 exporter.

Mr. Colwell said exports, in particular, are key to the provincial economy. "Every export brings new money into the province. We are fortunate that our fish products are in such high demand around the world."

The minister also pointed to other findings in the study that underline the significance of the fishery:

  • the industry leads tourism and ocean technologies when it comes to private sector employment

  • aquaculture has been identified as an area of major growth potential

  • one of every four jobs in Nova Scotia is directly or indirectly related to the oceans industry

The Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture was one of five government departments that funded the study prepared for the Oceans Institute of Canada.

Mr. Colwell said the study highlights the impact of the ocean sector on daily life in Nova Scotia. "Now we should be enhancing those opportunities."
