New Cellular Highway Hotline

Transportation and Public Works (to Oct. 2007)

"Fill Us In!"

That's what Transportation and Public Works is asking motorists to do with its new cellular Highway Hotline designed to help make Nova Scotia roads safer.

The Nova Scotia Highway Hotline is ready for calls at #3233. It's a toll-free call on the MT&T Mobility network to reach Canada's first cellular phone road-reporting service.

Motorists who encounter road conditions that affect safe driving on Nova Scotia highways are asked to pull over and call #3233 to report hazards such as potholes, fallen signs or debris on the roadway. Or Nova Scotians can call toll-free 1-888-432-3233 from any other phone.

"We want people to call us when they notice a stop sign down, a bad pothole, damaged guardrail, or any highway hazard," said Don Downe, Minister of Transportation and Public Works. "We want Nova Scotia motorists to be our partners in highway safety with this cellular service. It's a matter of listening to the people we work for."

Mr. Downe acknowledged the significant contribution of MT&T Mobility in launching the Nova Scotia Highway Hotline.

"MT&T Mobility quickly jumped on board to make this project work," said Mr. Downe. "It's a great example of how the public benefits from a government partnership with the private sector."

Said Chuck Hartlen, director of wireless network services at MT&T Mobility: "We're proud to be a partner with Transportation and Public Works in helping to make Nova Scotia roads safer. We never hesitated participating here with public safety at stake."

Victor Coldwell, acting executive director of district operations at Transportation and Public Works, said the convenience of the cellular telephone adds a new dimension to highway service.

"The freeze-thaw phenomenon is a yearly challenge for us," said Mr. Coldwell. "In springtime, poor road conditions can develop overnight. The key is to stay on top of the problem areas. This additional, immediate input from motorists can help us get the jump on potholes and provide a quicker, more responsive service."

To report road concerns, call 1-888-432-3233, or #3233 toll-free on the MT&T Mobility cellular network.
