Focus on Active Living
The Nova Scotia Sport and Recreation Commission, recognizing the significant survey results announced by the Heart and Stroke Foundation spotlighting inactivity among children, strongly supports and welcomes all initiatives that focus on improving physical activity in the province.
"Promoting active living is a major priority for the commission," said Bruce Holland, Minister responsible for Sport and Recreation. "Active living begins with finding enjoyable opportunities, on a daily basis, to become physically active at home, school, work and play. It is a recognized fact regular activity leads to improved physical health, a feeling of well-being and an improved quality of life."
The benefits of active living extend beyond the physical to the social, psychological and spiritual. These positive benefits to personal health in turn have a positive impact on health care costs.
The Nova Scotia Sport and Recreation Commission promotes active living through the funding of sport and recreation facilities and programs throughout the province, as well as promoting national initiatives such as SummerActive, WinterActive and Go for Green!
The Go for Green! initiative recently undertook a national active transportation strategy to address school and workplace commuting practices, as well as short trips within the community.
