Disabled Group Gets $10,000 Grant
The Central Highlands Association of the Disabled (CHAD) has received a $10,000 grant toward the purchase of an accessible vehicle, Wayne Fraser, MLA for Pictou East, announced today on behalf of Don Downe, Minister of Transportation and Public Works.
The New Glasgow association is the first recipient of the grant, available through the $150,000 Accessible Transportation Assistance program.
"We are extremely pleased with this grant," said Ron Levy, volunteer administrator for the CHAD transit system. "It allows us to give better service to the people who need it in our community."
The program was established in response to a report on inclusive transportation services initiated by the Disabled Persons Commission. The program is administered by the Department of Transportation and Public Works in co-operation with the departments of Community Services and Housing and Municipal Affairs.
"Seniors with mobility problems and persons with disabilities don't have the same transportation options as others," said Mr. Fraser. "Being able to contribute to this service helps them to more fully participate in their communities."
Grants of up to $10,000 toward the purchase of an accessible vehicle are available to communities, organizations or groups, including the private sector, that provide transportation services for seniors or persons with disabilities.
"I encourage others to contact the department and find out more about the possibilities of this program," said Mr. Fraser.
Applications are available at the Department of Transportation and Public Works by contacting Mr. Don Stonehouse, Accessible Transportation Assistance program administrator, at 902-424-6726 or via e-mail: [email protected]
