Wolfville School Signs Council
Agreement

Wolfville School will strengthen its partnership with parents and the community with the signing of a school advisory council letter of agreement tonight, Jan. 27.

Education and Culture Minister Robbie Harrison, and chair Heather MacLean and superintendent Jim Gunn of the Annapolis Valley Regional School Board will join members of the school council to sign the agreement.

Advisory councils strengthen the relationship between the school and the community, helping all partners work together in the best interests of children and their education, said Mr. Harrison.

"We have a shared responsibility in supporting student success," he said. "It is a ongoing process -- advisory councils bring all education partners to the table, working continually to make sure the school meets the needs of its students and the community."

Ms. MacLean agreed school advisory councils play a key role in the education system.

"As a school board, we value and encourage the establishment of school advisory councils. We hope to see many letters of agreement signed within our school board region over the next few years."

The nine-member Wolfville school advisory council comprises two teachers, two students, three parents, one member of the community and a support staff representative. As well, the school principal serves as a permanent member.

Council members have already developed a school-improvement plan and set of bylaws. Other priorities include increasing community and youth involvement in the school, enriching technology, fund-raising, enhancing the school environment, and communicating with education partners.

School advisory councils were legislated under the 1995 Education Act. Wolfville is the 11th school in Annapolis Valley Regional School Board to sign a letter of agreement.
