White Cross Program
Reaffirmed

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and the Department of Transportation and Public Works have reaffirmed their commitment to the white cross memorial marker program.

"I'm overjoyed. Transportation and Public Works continues to support our efforts to place memorial crosses on public highways with an eye to safety," said Geraldine Dedrick, president of MADD's Halifax regional chapter. "The department has agreed to help us draft safety guidelines for the program and assist police with traffic control."

At a meeting in Halifax today, Jan. 26, MADD agreed to consult with the department on the location of crosses it wishes to erect beside provincial roads. The guidelines are intended to ensure consistent, safe practices are used for placing and visiting the markers.

"We are proud to have taken a national leadership role in supporting this program," said Don Downe, Minister of Transportation and Public Works. "We have always supported MADD's fight against drinking and driving. We share the same goals."

The minister also asked staff to review, through the province's Road Safety Advisory Committee, other measures to discourage drinking and driving and to enhance the campaign spearheaded by MADD.

MADD has also accepted the minister's invitation to help shape the province's anti-drinking and driving initiatives through the advisory committee.
