EMERGENCY MEASURES ORGANIZATION--Firewood Collection for Quebec

Hundreds of Quebec families will soon have heat in their homes thanks to the warm generosity of Nova Scotians. Six rail cars containing approximately 360 cords of donated firewood will begin leaving Nova Scotia today,(Tuesday, Jan. 20) destined for ice storm-ravaged areas of Quebec.

The firewood was collected in Halifax, Windsor and Sydney after an urgent appeal for assistance came to the Emergency Measures Organization from officials in Quebec. Volunteers from the Halifax Regional Search and Rescue Team, West Hants Search and Rescue and Cape Breton Search and Rescue worked from Saturday until today loading the needed firewood on rail cars. All of the firewood was donated by Nova Scotians.

The collection of wood is winding up today at 5 p.m. The Emergency Measures Organization wishes to thank the volunteers, donors and the Cape Breton and Northern Nova Scotia Railway, Windsor and Hants Railway and CN Rail for their generous assistance in this humanitarian effort.

The firewood will be shipped to St-Hyacinthe, Que. where it will be distributed to people who may be without electricity for up to another week.
