EMERGENCY MEASURES ORGANIZATION--Firewood Dropoff for Quebec

The Government of Nova Scotia is responding to an urgent appeal from Quebec for supplies of firewood.

In co-operation with CN Rail and the Halifax Regional Search and Rescue Organization Team, Emergency Measures Organization is organizing collection of donations of firewood to be sent to stricken areas of Quebec.

On Saturday, Jan. 17, and Sunday, Jan. 18, donations of firewood will be accepted at the CN Rail siding on Chain Lake Drive, Bayers Lake Business Park. The siding is next to the Volvo Canada plant. Hours of operation are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday.

Arrangements are also being made for similar dropoffs of donated wood in Windsor and Sydney beginning Monday. Details on the times and locations for these drop-off points are still being completed.

CN Rail is transporting the wood free of charge to relief centres in Quebec. The Windsor and Hantsport Railway and the Cape Breton and Central Nova Scotia Railway are helping in the effort.

The public is being asked to help with this effort by bringing any donations of firewood to these locations. Volunteers will be on hand to assist in its loading onto the railcars.

Nova Scotians can call the Public Enquiries line of the Department of Business and Consumer Services for information about the relief effort, including donating firewood. The numbers are 1-800 670-4357 (toll free) or 424-5200 in the Halifax area. The offices will be open this Saturday and Sunday from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., in addition to regular business hours Monday to Friday.
