ECONOMIC
DEVELOPMENT/TOURISM--Alderney Landing Centre Unveiled

Alderney Landing will emerge as a commercial, recreational, cultural and entertainment "people place" on the Dartmouth waterfront, say representatives of the three levels of government.

Senator Wilfred Moore, on behalf of Fred Mifflin, Secretary of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency; Health Minister Jim Smith, and Mayor Walter Fitzgerald of Halifax Regional Municipality were in downtown Dartmouth today to unveil architectural models of the project.

Alderney Landing will result in direct and indirect economic benefits for downtown Dartmouth as well as Halifax Regional Municipality. It will also create a new synergy between the Dartmouth and Halifax waterfronts, supporters said.

The two-level Alderney Landing complex will house a theatre, a market, and a retail and events site. It will be located between Alderney Gate and the ferry terminal building and adjacent to the existing outdoor events plaza.

"It is estimated this project will generate local purchases of $6 million and increase traffic in downtown Dartmouth to more than two million people each year," said Senator Moore. "The new facilities and activities planned for the Alderney Landing will complement similar attractions on the Halifax waterfront."

"Halifax Regional Municipality residents, and indeed all Nova Scotians, will be very proud of this beautiful site and will undoubtedly look forward to visiting Alderney Landing regularly," said Dr. Smith, representing the province. "Needless to say, it will also be an exciting attraction for many tourists visiting from outside of Nova Scotia."

Added Mayor Fitzgerald: "Alderney Landing will offer a unique, family-oriented set of attractions for a wide variety of interests in the greater metropolitan area."

Eastern Front Theatre, Dartmouth Players, Halifax Regional Municipality Tourism, Dartmouth Visual Arts and the Dartmouth Farmers' Market were among the community groups who had displays and exhibits at the unveiling.

The project has received $2.575 million from the Atlantic Canada

Opportunities Agency and Economic Development and Tourism through the Canada/Nova Scotia COOPERATION Agreement on Economic Diversification.
