New Text to Support Social Studies Education
EDUCATION/CULTURE--New Text to Support Social Studies Education
The ministers of education of the Atlantic provinces announce the delivery of a new regionally developed textbook, Atlantic Canada in the Global Community, to support social studies education.
The text was published through the joint efforts of the four Atlantic provinces and a consortium of Breakwater Books Ltd., a Newfoundland-based publisher, and Prentice Hall Canada Inc.
Atlantic Canada in the Global Community is an example of the progressive and collaborative projects being pursued under the auspices of the Atlantic Provinces Education Foundation. The new text and accompanying curriculum are innovative in that they establish the first set of common curriculum outcomes in social studies for students throughout the Atlantic provinces.
The text represents an exciting new opportunity for students to explore the nature of Atlantic Canada and its people. It serves as a springboard to their examination of the past, present and future of the region by relating people, places and events in the Atlantic Canadian community.
The curriculum will help students understand the interrelated nature of their history, geography, cultures and the regional economy. In addition, it will emphasize the changes in technology and the ways in which people relate, bringing learners to an understanding that they are citizens of the global community as well as Atlantic Canada.
